game streaming service OnLive wants to start

The game streaming service OnLive wants to start in June in the U.S.. After some delays in the past OnLive in the United States will be offered from mid-June for $ 14.95 a month. For the games offered, however, an extra fee will be levied. Doubts exist mainly in terms of response time OnLive.

After years of development and some announcements soon, it seems to be so far: OnLive announced at the Game Developer Conference in mid-June to go to the E3 gaming convention in the USA first to the starting line. In OnLive is an online gaming service, run in which the games themselves on the server of the provider network.

Players do not need an expensive PC gaming anymore, but only a simple computer or a set-top box for television. PC or set-top boxes provide the display on the screen and serve as an input device, while the sophisticated calculations are performed in the data center OnLive. A cheap netbook, shall be sufficient for example to the latest Ego Shooter in 720p resolution to be able to play.

Current games like Mass Effect 2, Borderlands, Crysis and Assassin’s Creed 2 will be playable at OnLive. The provider wants to offer an alternative to buying new games. For $ 14.95, subscribers, but only get access to OnLive, for the games they have to pay extra, which has already taken care of some criticism. What will the games cost is not yet known. Big game companies like Ubisoft, Electronic Arts, Atari and Take 2 support OnLive nevertheless already.

The advantages of such a Games on Demand service are enticing: It’s not a particularly powerful and correspondingly more expensive computers needed to play the latest games to Action. Games need not be installed locally, updates are also omitted. There is also no longer tied to the PC on which you have installed the game, but may use different computers on the exchange.

The Internet must be fast enough, however, recommended for games in HD quality at least 5 Mbps of bandwidth. The sticking point is the latency: How much is the delay to sense arises from the inability of the game is running on a remote server and not locally?

Some analysts doubt because of the delay time because OnLive really will revolutionize the market for PC and console games, at least so far as it relates to games, which depend on quick reactions.
